I was born in Covington, Louisiana. After college (I studied Literature and Art History, with plans to go into academia) I moved to Serbia for two years. I was inspired by the Byzantine icons-- a motif that still finds its way into my work regularly-- and, for the first time in my life, found I had the time to paint every day. I quickly realized this was how I wanted to spend the rest of my life and I returned to the United States determined to establish an art career. I've been painting full-time ever since.

I still spend a lot of time traveling, and when I'm not in New Orleans you can find me in some distant land (most recently, I took the Trans-Siberian railway from Beijing to Moscow), sketchbook in hand, gathering inspiration.

Describe your art in three words. Linear, allegorical, interdisciplinary

Describe yourself in one word. Curious.

Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece? I start small and churn out lots and lots of smaller pieces on a common theme.

Where do you draw inspiration? Art history-- especially those cultures and times when religious art prevailed. Nature-- the insides of flowers are so bizarre and beautiful and employ genius geometric forms. Textures-- lately I've been especially into textiles and weavings. Literature-- constantly reading and words (often a single word or phrase, in or out of context) can enter my head and knock around until an image crystallizes from it. Rituals, the every day, the micro-- constantly finding tiny things to affix my attention on, a pebble or a window blind, and try to draw out its beauty and grandeur.

Where can we find you when you are not creating art? Traveling or planning my next trip.

What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year? Morning is when I am at my most productive and when I feel excited and invigorated. I can usually keep up my creative pace until noon, and everything after that goes downhill and by nightfall, I feel discouraged and despondent. I have to be renewed each morning and feel each day is a small cycle of birth and death. I prefer weekdays to the weekend, mostly because the world is quieter and most people are at work. I prefer extreme cold to extreme heat, and of course somewhere in the middle of the two-- Autumn and Spring-- are ideal.
