I am explore large archetypical forms built by the motif of crochet stitches. Twine and steel are efficient mediums for creating light-weight voluminous sculptures that have as much etheric space as solid. This allows for light to move through these pieces, creating shadows that are of equal importance to the object. This is the physical manifestation of Tantra.
Elizabeth Eckman is a New Orleans artist living and working in the Oretha Castle Haley area.

Describe yourself in one word.
Divine.
What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?
The energetic synchronicity of creative minds is so immediate here. The current of inspiration is as powerful as the river delta and as eccentric as our ghosts. This is a unique and intimate situation that has worldwide attention.
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
I meditate with mantra for 3 hours daily and then I follow this never-ending universal thread.
Where do you draw inspiration?
Quantum physics, cosmology, yogic science, and my cats.
Who are your artistic influences or gurus?
My great grandmother was a crochet mystic. She would sit looking and conversing with you for hours, drinking hot tea out of a glass, with a sugar cube between her teeth and crochet, without looking at her hands. When she stood up sweaters would fall out of her lap.
In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?
The musicians possessed by the muse-Buddy Bolden, Robert Johnson, James Booker, the prettiest man in the city, Troy Andrews. My work is the sound of my breath.
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
Sitting in meditation at 5 and 5, in the garden, reading, or at the theater.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
The magic hour, it’s about an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset. This is when light and shadow do that glowing impressionist fantasy thing.
What is something people don’t know about you? A fun fact.
I am insanely candid with everyone. I can't imagine anything I haven't said.
