What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?
Much like most artists that have moved here, the vibe (deep, I know) of New Orleans can be invigorating for an artist. In the French Quarter, there's an appreciation for the classic and historical aspects, as well as an open mindedness that isn't found too many other places. You can feel good about yourself and your passions when others so openly display the love they have for their own. I've recently moved to Mid-City, so I'll have to see what effect that has on my creative process.
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
As someone with severe attention deficit, my ritual mostly involves 45 minutes of finding a movie to play in the background, contemplating the image I want to create (stare at the space above my tv), finding reference images I'll be using, some rough sketches and then on to the canvas.
Where do you draw inspiration?
It can vary. Sometimes a song will play that sparks an image, or a movie will get some themes running. Of course, seeing other artwork will motivate me and get me out of a rut
Who are your artistic influences or gurus?
Frank Frazetta, Costa Dvorezky, McBess, Richard Schmid... The list constantly grows.
In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?
The Unicorns, Ten Kens... discombobulated harmony?
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
At the gym or at work. Given that I can't stay focused on one thing at a time, I paint throughout the day when I'm home. Watching TV, playing video games, cooking, all at once. Multi-tasking at it's worst.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
Autumn and spring
What is something people don’t know about you? A fun fact.
