300 for 300: King Milling

A portrait of King Milling commissioned by Nola Media Group, producers of NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune as part of its tricentennial project, 300 for 300: People who make New Orleans, New Orleans. King Milling, who has a long record of community service, was president of Whitney Bank for 24 years -- he retired in 2008 -- and also reigned as Rex, king of Carnival, in 1993. But in the wake of 2005's Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 BP oil spill, he has taken on, with passion, what may be his most important role of all: preserving Louisiana's fragile coastline and making sure that people understand why it is important. Saving the coast "is not just about the environment. It's about culture, commerce and survival," he said in a 2009 interview. "It doesn't take a genius to understand the infrastructure is at risk, the future is at risk. That's what we will lose if we don't do anything. Originally from the small town of Willits in Northern California, I moved to New Orleans from the Bay Area in 2013. I've always loved to draw and grew up taking art classes--everything from ceramics to modern dance--but it wasn't until my sophomore year in college that I took my first painting course. It was love at first sight and I've been fascinated with the medium ever since. New Orleans has given me the time, inspiration, and community support to paint and I couldn't be more grateful.
