A portrait of Dr. Sara T. Mayo commissioned by Nola Media Group, producers of NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune as part of its tricentennial project, 300 for 300: People who make New Orleans, New Orleans. In 1905, when New Orleans clinics barred women from practicing medicine, Dr. Sara T. Mayo and seven other female physicians started their own: the New Orleans Hospital and Dispensary for Women and Children, where an all-female staff offered free treatment for the city's poor. Mayo not only practiced medicine but also stayed busy raising money to run the clinic, which was supported with donations from private sources as well as city and state funding. She also served on committees to fight diseases such as tuberculosis. Mayo kept up her busy schedule -- and kept healing those who might otherwise fall through the cracks -- until she died at age 60. | Read full story |

Originally from the small town of Willits in Northern California, I moved to New Orleans from the Bay Area in 2013. I've always loved to draw and grew up taking art classes--everything from ceramics to modern dance--but it wasn't until my sophomore year in college that I took my first painting course. It was love at first sight and I've been fascinated with the medium ever since. New Orleans has given me the time, inspiration, and community support to paint and I couldn't be more grateful.
