A stretch of highly-industrialized land along the Mississippi River in southern Louisiana is notoriously known as Cancer Alley. The residents of Cancer Alley, who are predominately Black, have rates of cancer and Covid-19 significantly higher than the rest of Louisiana. Their risk of getting cancer from air pollution is 95% higher than most Americans and in April 2020, St. John the Baptist Parish had the nation’s highest per capita COVID-19 death rate.
