I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013. Since graduating, I have been living and making art in New Orleans, LA. Locally, I am represented by Hall-Barnett Gallery and Where Y'art and have shown my work across the country including at Art Basel in Miami, FL.

My subject matter, the materials I use, and the process for making are natural outgrowths from my interest in reflecting my immediate community, family and friends living in New Orlean's Seventh Ward. Much of my work is inspired by participating and witnessing the weekly, sometimes daily celebrations that her family and community throws. Through BBQ's, birthdays, Second Lines, Mardi Gras Indian celebrations and calendar holidays, I observe a beautiful visual culture I don't see documented other places

What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?

What I love most about creating art in New Orleans is to find inspiration all I have to do is walk out my front door. My subject matter, the materials I use, and the process for making are natural outgrowths from my interest in reflecting my immediate community, my family and friends living in New Orlean's Seventh Ward. I am constantly documenting my interactions with my family and community through digital and film photography. These images are the inspiration for the paintings and sculptures I ultimately create. Many of the alternative materials I incorporate into my paintings are found in the neighborhood or used by the subjects of my work.

Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?

Usually I start by making a sketch using crayon and marker. After that I decide on the scale I'd like the piece to be, then build the painting surface. From there each painting is made differently so it is always an adventure! 

Where do you draw inspiration?

The longer I live in New Orleans, the more I learn about the histories and idiosyncrasies of my immediate community and family. I've been especially motivated by participating and witnessing the weekly, sometimes daily celebrations that my community throws. Through BBQ's, birthdays, Second Lines, Mardi Gras Indian celebrations and calendar holidays, I observe a beautiful visual culture I don't see documented other places. 

Who are your artistic influences or gurus?

Kerry James Marshall! Janiva Ellis, Paul Graham, Anselm Kiefer. So many more. 

In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?

I listen to a lot of Lil Wayne. I don't know how much his music describes my work but his music is so beloved locally, especially his early projects very accurately reflect what I see in this city.

Where can we find you when you are not creating art?

Shooting pool. At a Second Line. Maybe out dancing. Im pretty chill and rarely make it out the 7th Ward so most likely I'm hanging out with friends or playing with my dog.

What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?

I'm a morning person so 7:30am. By then I've had my first cup of coffee and it hasn't gotten too hot out yet. My favorite day of the week definitely is Sunday. Sundays are like a weekly holiday (Second Lines, BBQ's, pool parties)! I love the month of April. The weather is fantastic and its my birthday month.
