A portrait of Henriette DeLille commissioned by Nola Media Group, producers of NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune as part of its tricentennial project, 300 for 300: People who make New Orleans, New Orleans. Growing up Creole in New Orleans, Henriette Delille was not only well-educated but also groomed for a life of placage, in which she would be a rich man's mistress. But because of her Catholic upbringing, she renounced that life and opened herself to a life of faith. She was confirmed in 1834 and two years later founded what would become the Sisters of the Holy Family, an order of nuns committed to caring for the elderly, poor and sick, and teaching people who, in a segregated society, had little opportunity for education. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI declared her "venerable" -- putting her on the path to sainthood. If and when she is canonized, she would become New Orleans' first native-born Catholic saint. | Read full story |

Originally from the small town of Willits in Northern California, I moved to New Orleans from the Bay Area in 2013. I've always loved to draw and grew up taking art classes--everything from ceramics to modern dance--but it wasn't until my sophomore year in college that I took my first painting course. It was love at first sight and I've been fascinated with the medium ever since. New Orleans has given me the time, inspiration, and community support to paint and I couldn't be more grateful.
