“La Balize” was the first European fort built at the mouth of the Mississippi River. It eventually became known as Pilottown, a hub for river pilots and oil drilling exploration. The human structures here have been washed away and rebuilt dozens of times since its foundation. Today, there are no permanent residents and very few structures and the coastline is quickly eroding.
'La Balize' is a meditation on human impermanence and the relationship between colonization and the environment. What would this land be like if we had let it be? How might the land heal if we prioritized our environment over economic greed?
