Archbishop Antoine Blanc

A portrait of Archbishop Antoine Blanc commissioned by Nola Media Group, producers of Nola.com / The Times-Picayune as part of its tricentennial project, 300 for 300: People who make New Orleans, New Orleans. The legacy: When Antoine Blanc was appointed in 1835 to guide New Orleans' Catholics, the city boasted but a handful of places of worship. Over the next 25 years, he would oversee a period of explosive growth, both in the city, which would become the fourth-largest in the nation, and the local Church, which would be elevated from diocese to archdiocese status during his tenure. In that time, he would spearhead the establishment of more churches than any other New Orleans bishop or archbishop -- from St. Alphonsus, St. Ann and St. Augustine to St. Michael's, St. Theresa and St. Vincent De Paul -- and minister to a city regularly stricken by outbreaks of cholera and yellow fever. When he died in 1860, his body was paraded solemnly through the streets. Artist + Connie Kittok

I was born and raised in New Orleans with 35 years as a commercial graphic artist working for corporate companies throughout the New Orleans area. I received a Commercial Art degree from Delgado Community College. I've also studied at the University of Southeastern Louisiana and various artist workshops throughout Louisiana.

The subjects I choose to paint are usually subjects that remind me of my southern roots. The music, the people, the food, the cultures, etc. All that is New Orleans and its roots. I have what you might call an impressionistic style. I call it contemporary folk art with quick wide brush strokes and flashes of color, highlighted with gold leaf and raised texture. I am always trying to bring across my love for the southern area and it's people to my paintings.

Connie Kittok is a New Orleans artist living and working in the Uptown neighborhood.
