A few years back, I lost a lot of very important things in a very short period of time.
I started walking the 3-mile stretch of the lakefront as a meditation, a place where I could catch my thoughts, and sometimes as a place to disappear between the clouds.
It became part of my daily ritual.
I'm not sure how many miles I'd walked before I started snapping pictures, but it wasn't many.
At the time, I was getting pretty curious about sorting out the limitations of mobile phone cameras, and I've always has a strong affinity for staring into the spaces where the land meets water.
It was a natural fit, and still is as this project of photographing Lake Pontchartrain, nearly every day for the last 3 years, is still on going.
No day is ever the same out there, that's what keeps me going back.
Questions & Answers
Describe your art in three words.
calming. reflective. interesting.
Describe yourself in one word. Curious
What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?
I love the tapestry of history that surrounds the city. It's easy to get lost in the stories written in it's potholed streets and paint cracked shutters. Nature influences me everyday. I'm constantly chasing down the sun, looking for places where the air, land, and water all connect. Lucky for me, I'm surrounded by water.
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
I just get in my truck and drive a direction. I always stop for the brown highway signs, tourist points of interest, you never know what you're going to run into out there.
Where do you draw inspiration?
Nature. The natural environment around me. Some of the edits I create are inspired from rabbit-holing whatever micro-niche subject of the day I stumbled across.
Who are your artistic influences or gurus?
The iPhone, I couldn't be doing what I'm doing now if it weren't for the maturating and simplifying of the elements of photography and graphic design.
In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?
I'd be a one-man band, arms and legs just kicking and swinging away.
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
Sorry, closely guarded secret.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
Dusk and dawn for the drama in the sky, especially in the summertime when the air is so thick.
What is something people don’t know about you? A fun fact.
I have my pilot's license to fly drones.
