What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?
It is such a joy to rediscover a city through an artist's lens! There are so many minute details that make up the whole essence of a neighborhood. I've recently moved to the Bayou St. John, where my daily walks feel brand new.. Between the ever-changing weather patterns, seasons, sunlight.. every color, texture feels so inspiring!
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
When I arrive to a scene, I first turn off the mental noise, slow the thinking..take some time to drop in. Only then am I able to tap into my feeling sense and a state of observation. Once I become present, the world slowly reveals itself to me. Certain elements call to be captured, it's like they bubble to the surface.
Where do you draw inspiration?
I draw inspiration from both the external world and internal world. I feel as though our environment can help to explain the human experience if we just take the time to listen. Long-standing philosophical complexities can become so simple if we just observe and gather lessons from the natural world around us.
Who are your artistic influences or gurus?
Ansel Adams
In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?
I'm typically creating playlists that involve my environment... I have a full moon playlist, one for the ocean, rivers, plants... Anything that sings to the natural world! I especially love Andrew Bird's Echolocations albums, which are beautiful live recordings of him playing the violin in various settings.
Here's a little taste of Echolocations: Canyon
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
Ohhhh you can find me all over the world hiking, climbing, surfing, camping. Life's an adventure.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
I may be a little biased because it's the month I was born, but I love March. The beginning of spring is such a fresh time when the Earth is going through her rebirth process. It's a time filled with new life, hope, potential.
What is something people don’t know about you? A fun fact.
I'm a proud mama of a pup named Ponchatoula the Catahoula!
