This lumen print comes from my Ancient Algiers/Modern Fossils series that explores the past & present landscape using a (photographically) ancient process. Prior to, and at the time of the European expansion, a cypress forest covered the area now known as Algiers. We see vestiges of that ancient past today alongside flourishing flora that has been introduced to the area over time.
Using the energy of the ever-present sun, this series illuminates the natural world, representing what was here before and what is here now.
After all, we are the ancient past.
**********
A solar printing process creates a lumen print. These images were composed on a mixture of recycled photographic paper then placed in the sun for development, resulting in unique impressions of our native and present landscape. This photographic process, originated by British scientist Fox Talbot, was among the first photographic techniques developed in the 19th century, 140 years after Bienville claimed Louisiana for the French.
This print will arrive signed on the back, unmatted, unframed and carefully packaged to ensure proper delivery. Please note there may be a slight color shift due to monitors/calibration.

Follow this artistAt the root of all my work is my worldview. From the tiniest twig to the largest tree, the natural world is a source of inspiration for me, as well as the environment we create for ourselves. As the world becomes more modernized, I often find myself in nature connecting and recognizing humankind’s place in the world. With that thought in mind, I use the 19th century technique of lumen printing to create a true impression of our world. In my lens based photography and songwriting, I explore the world, reflecting on what is, what can be and the relationship between ourselves and nature. I love sharing with others whether through new works, exhibitions, performances/presentations, teaching, and random stories. I believe that when we form a connection, whether it lasts for a moment or a lifetime, the benefits are infinite.
Natasha Sanchez is a New Orleans artist living and working in the Lower Garden District neighborhood.
